THERMAL BRIDGING SOLUTION ON A NEW STEEL FRAME HOUSE

We were recently called out to investigate a potential thermal Bridging (Cold Bridging) problem in a new build steel framed house.  This was a low energy house being build with a steel frame with a block inner and outer skin with Expanded Polystyrene insulation boards in the cavity.

The builder noticed that he could not get any insulation between the steel frame and the inner skin of block and called us to investigate possible solutions.  The only Viable solution was to stick Spaceloft Aerogel insulation to the steel posts that would prevent the thermal bridge travelling from the steel posts to the inside of the building.

(The photos should explain the detail)  One very interesting part of this install was that we can use a variety of insulation types and thicknesses in order to create the best detail possible in any given circumstance.
